Last Summer, we decided with J to take this road trip from the Laurentides to Newfoundland! It was such an experience as we had some road ahead of us.
It took us only 15 or 16 hours to get to the ferry based in Nova Scotia to get there…
How to get to Newfoundland?
You have a few options:
-by plane, you will have to fly to St John’s or to Gander’s International Airport (this is the closest one to Twilingate) and rent a car (but I did book everything late, and I couldn’t find any cars)
-by car, but be ready to drive a lot and enjoy some time on the water!
But first, you have to drive to North Sydney in NS and then take the ferry. Here is the link to book your tickets and car if you have one.

We decided to take the ferry late at night and arrive in Port aux Basques as it took only 7 hours of a boat, but we didn’t have any cabins left, so our night could have been better. When we returned, we drove to Argentia (south of St John), and we got lucky and had a cabin for 16 hours!
What about Twilingate?
Twilingate was one of our stops as we drove around Newfoundland Island.
Twilingate is known as the “Iceberg Capital of the World” because of the many icebergs that flow past its shores in early spring and summer.
At one time, Twilingate was known as ” Toulinquet.”
It was so named but the French because its appearance was so much like that of a group of islands by that name off the coast of France near Brest. In the early 1700s, Toulinquet soon became Twilingate to the English Settlers who could not speak or read French.
The town was incorporated on September 30, 1965, and has a population of approximately 2.196
Twilingate became linked to the mainland of Newfoundland by a causeway in 1973 and had a rich history dating back to the early 1700s.
What can you discover in Twilingate?
-First, the icebergs, but we weren’t lucky, and we didn’t see any during last summer, but trust me, we are planning very soon to get back to catch a chance to see them.
-Take a walk around the Hospital Pond Community Garden & Trailway
-Long Point Lighthouse
-Boats at Harbour Authority and all of these colorful houses
-All of the coves, the whales, and the wildlife.
-Make a stop to eat something at the Crow’s Nest Cafe. They have a Facebook page if you want to see who they are:
Crow’s Nest The place is charming, with a great view, and the food is simple, accessible, and so good!!!!
Twilingate has become one of our favorite places on the East Side of Canada, and we can’t wait to get back there.
