As you probably know, I always loved the mountains (and I’m still dreaming one day of having my log cabin in front of a mountain).
Vancouver Island is well known for its marine wildlife, beaches, hikes, and mountains.
I was planning this winter to go up to Mount Cain but changing from our summer tire to winter tires was not possible (as the prices here are so much higher and we didn’t have the suitable material to do it), so we waited for my Spring holidays to get there. The road was still snowy (like a lot), but I will say that I’m happy that I did invest in an excellent car (a Subaru, not to mention it!!!!)
Where is Mount Cain located?
Mount Cain is located in Port Mc Neil, but in reality, you have to turn just before the town called Woss. So you will have to be very eye-opening to see where to turn.
If you come from Campbell River, follow Highway 19 North on Vancouver Island, turn left on Nimpish Road, turn again left on Davie Road, and then follow Mount Cain Park Road.
Then, you will have a bumpy road for 16 km until the Alpine Park (but the views when you are getting down are incredible because when you are going up, the road can be tricky!
This is why it is mandatory to carry chains with you all the time!)
To help you find your way, you will see signs of Mount Cain Alpin Resort.
Once up there, you will see a lot of parking to put your car. It’s now up to you to choose what you want to do: enjoy a hot chocolate, go for a round of ski.
What is unique about this place?
Mount Cain is operated by only local volunteers who managed the weekend, Monday, and holidays.
They opened from Mi-December to early April.
They are a community of skiers lovers, and you definitely can feel this, which makes Mount Cain the most incredible place to come and enjoy some ski (without the crowd) and some fresh snow.
They even manage themselves the Lower and Upper T, and sometimes, it just doesn’t work, so you will have to hike if you want to ski. It is incredible to see how much effort they put into that so that many people can enjoy some ski around Mount Cain.
This place is a local treasure for skiers and boarders; glitz-free riding at Mount Cain is about powder.
Why should you come?
To enjoy a day surrounded by the mountains, some good snow, and to take amazing pictures! Let me know what do you think about this place.
