Chemainus

Last weekend, as we were going back home, we made an impromptu stop in Chemainus.

Where is Chemainus?

Chemainus is located on Highway 1 between Duncan and Ladysmith on Vancouver Island. It is effortless to find it; follow the signs.

How did we decide to make a stop?

It was the third time we saw the signs, but I saw a nice picture from the town, so I was let’s go for it, and we didn’t know anything about it.

So what is so special about Chemainus?

Their city center is charming with charming buildings and shops. And they have these fantastic murals in the town. Unfortunately, I didn’t take a picture of all of them, but they are really impressive for sure.

A little history about the town:

The origin of the name Chemainus is rich in first nations culture, telling a shaman prophet called Broken Chest (Tsa-meeun-is). His name came to say the legend of a massive chest wound that had been inflicted upon him; surviving, he became a powerful chief leading his people for many prosperous years. His people, the Stz’uminus First Nations, took his name to honor their leader.

The Chemainus area started as series of quiet bays in the area inhabited by first nations people. The Hul’qumi’num people settled in Kulleet Bay due to the rich abundance of herring and shellfish, establishing a permanent village called Shts’emines (English translated name of Chemainus).
As the area’s abundance began to be discovered by English-speaking and island inhabitants, a small town (what you see currently and know as the heart of Old Town Chemainus) began to form. The town’s congregation was slow and steady for many years, establishing their first foray into the forestry industry. As water flowed along the banks and lush forests surrounded the town of Chemainus, it was only natural that this industry would be exploited; bringing with it opportunity and success.

What about their World Famous Murals and Sculptures?

With 44 murals currently and a few planned for later this year, plus 13 works of art and countless others hiding through the town, you are sure to have a wonderful day exploring it. Follow the yellow footprints at your own pace from one mural to the next, or take a narrated tour in an old-fashioned, horse-drawn carriage. Each mural showcases the rich history; each scene depicts some part of Chemainus culture.

Why should you make a stop there?

To relax, enjoy the surroundings and all of the murals that the First Nations inspired. It’s a natural beauty!
