Bedwell Trail

Yesterday, we decided to go to Bedwell Lake to hike in the mountains and enjoy the scenery.

How did I find this trail?

I did spend a lot of time finding new trails on Vancouver Island, and this one was rated to be one of the most spectacular, so it’s how we went there.

Where is Bewdwell Trail located?

It is, for once, quite easy to get there as you can put an address into your GPS.
Jim Mitchell Road, Comox-Strathcona D, BC

But be aware that once you arrived at the beginning of the road, it can be pretty challenging.
This is what is announced: rugged road conditions exist, suggested 4×4 access, parking is limited, 6.5 km ahead.
When we arrived on Saturday, the parking was limited, and the road was not so bad (but we had experienced some crazy road too). But if you want to have a look at Jim Mitchell Dam, the end of the road is definitely more challenging.
You will see that it’s the entrance to the mines too so if you come during the week, the road will be busy.

What can you expect on this trail?

I did my research before going there, and I was planning to go to Bedwell Lake. Then, as we were hiking up, we wanted to make it to Baby Bedwell. And finally, we stopped less than 1.5 km before because it was impossible to find the path to get there. As you climb there, the snow was pretty intense. You need to be careful as the snow is melting, and you can fall in some holes and get some snow into your thigh! So even on May 29, it is a trail considered challenging but because of the snow. We thought at first that we wanted to experience it again before the end of June, but it seems pretty impossible. I think it’s better to go there during the summer (especially in August), so the snow will be out and you can go to the campground and enjoy the other trails that go to Cream Lake too.
The hike itself is pretty abrupt, but it is possible. Be aware that there are many tree branches on the ground, you will have to pass some bridges, and some stairs which are not in very okay conditions. Bring with you some hiking shoes (the one that protects your ankle) and if you don’t have a hiking stick, take one).
Usually, people say that to go to Baby Bedwell, it was supposed to be 1 hour and a half to hike to Baby Bedwell Lake, and it took us almost 3 hours (I admit, we made a few stops for taking the photo, but the snow was intense!) and 45 minutes to hike to Bedwell Lake. Then you should add 2 hours to Cream Lake.

Why should you go there?

It is one of our favorite trails even if you couldn’t make it as the scenery is spectacular and the view of the mountains is majestic. It was impressive to see the snow melting down at the top of the lakes. We ended up hiking 13 km, and our legs are still so sore, but it was worth it!
I would make the trails once we come back on Vancouver Island, but I will bring myself things to camp up there in the mountains.
